The Executive Director of the Telegraph Media Group, Lord Black, has been elected president of the European Newspaper and News Media Publishers (ENPA).

The gay Tory peer was chosen during ENPA’s general assembly in Oslo last weekend.

He said: “I look forward very much to working closely with colleagues from across Europe, and with the ENPA team in Brussels, on the vital and complex issues we face in order to ensure that we retain a free and fearless media.

“Data protection, copyright, taxation, the so-called ‘right to be forgotten’ and many other issues are high up the agenda, and we have a big job to do in representing European newspaper publishers and putting our case to the new commission and parliament.”

Lord Black succeeds the Norwegian publisher, Ivar Rusdal, chair of Nordsjø Media AS.

Lord Black was nominated last month for Peer of the Year at the PinkNews Awards in Parliament.

He has campaigned for an outright ban on gay-to-straight conversion therapy on the NHS and was a prominent vocal supporter of same-sex marriage during last year’s House of Lords debate.
